Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. In her childhood Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford started acting in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized the school was not suitable for her. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and on the fourth time she applied she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. However, she made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate was also a regular performer in the theatre, and later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate was recognized for her stand-up comedy and was added to her portfolio in 1996.
